ABSTRACT

The impact of spontaneous Neospora caninum infection on pregnancy loss and subsequent pregnancy in grazing lactating dairy cows was evaluated. Data from 1273 females (878 multiparous and 395 first-calving cows) from six preselected dairy herds were analyzed. Cows were classified as seropositive (SP) (prevalence, 24%; range, 11%-33%) or seronegative (SN) by indirect immunofluorescence detection of antibodies against N caninum. Seropositive cows (prevalence, 40.0%) presented higher (P < 0.001) incidence of abortion compared with SN cows (prevalence, 4.1%). Neospora caninum DNA was detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction in 44.4% of intact aborted fetuses from SP cows, whereas none was found in those aborted from SN cows. The average daily milk production adjusted to 305 days was lower (P < 0.001) in SP (22.5 ± 0.3 L/day) than in SN cows (24.8 ± 0.2 L/day). Furthermore, SP cows presented greater occurrence of retained placenta (17.1% vs. 6.0%; P < 0.001) and acute postpartum metritis (9.8% vs. 2.4%; P < 0.001). Despite similar pregnancy rates after first postpartum artificial insemination (27.6% vs. 31.8%; P = 0.40), cumulative pregnancy rates during 300 days in milk (94.7% vs. 98.5%; P = 0.005) were greater in SN cows. A reduced (P = 0.0001) Cox proportional hazard of pregnancy rate at 300 days in milk and a longer interval from parturition or abortion to conception (median, 111 vs. 101 days) were observed in SP compared with SN cows. Spontaneous N caninum infection is a significant contributing factor of pregnancy loss and occurrence of uterine disease (i.e., retained placenta and metritis), negatively affecting subsequent pregnancy in grazing lactating dairy cows.

ABSTRACT

This report describes a case of granulomatous endometritis caused by coccidiosis in an immunologically uncompromised 63 year old patient. The glandular epithelium of the endometrium contained numerous intracytoplasmic cysts, corresponding to periodic acid Schiff positive and methenamine silver negative sporoblasts. The endometrial glands revealed reactive phenomena, such as eosinophilic and squamous glandular metaplasia and intraluminal desquamation. Non-necrotising epithelioid granulomata, lacking the presence of parasites, were present in the stroma. Although not detected in the stool examination, the organisms were probably Isospora belli. There was no evidence of other foci of the disease. Coccidiosis should be differentiated from the more commonly occurring coccidiomycosis.

ABSTRACT

A case of endometrial trichinosis is reported; the patient lived rear Cd. Delicias, Chih., an endemic area for trichinosis. A 38 years old obese, diabetic woman, with high blood pressure, used to eat frequently pork meat and its products; she presented with abnormal genital bleeding, abdominal pain, and pelvic congestion. Histerectomy was performed. Pathological study of the uterus showed Trichinella spiralis larvae with microcalcifications, and lymphocytic infiltration in basal endometrium. As far as we know endometrial trichinosis has not been previously described.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

This study constitutes the first reported isolation of Trichomonas fetus from the uterus of breeding camels. Twenty-four of 68 camels, which were barren for 1-4 years were found to be positive for T. fetus. One preputial washing of a camel bull which had served the herd was found to be positive for T. fetus. The uterine flora of all camels were examined. Ten different bacterial and 2 fungal species were isolated. All samples were negative for Campylobacter sp., Taylorella equigenitalis and Streptococcus zooepidemicus.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the work is to present the results of prophylactic actions used in the Departments of the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Medical Academy in Bia l ystok giving reasons for changes and modifications concerning the present state of procedures. At the same time, attention has been paid to some epidemiological factors of trichomoniasis in women treated in gynecological departments for various diseases of the female genital organ. Women treated in the Departments of the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1974-1975 were included in these studies. Total number of the investigated women was 9000 but those with trichomoniasis were 610. There were presented the results of procedures at the admittance rooms of the Gynecological Departments in which examinations and treatment of trichomoniasis, in reasonable cases, were carried out before admitting the patients to proper gynecological treatment were presented. The whole of the evaluation was based on our own scheme of microbiological procedures.
